My artistic style has been shaped by many things -- my love of flowers and plants and gardening, my teachers and instructors over the years, my background in stained glass, my study of art history. I am captivated by the genre of traditional still life floral painting, influenced by the dynamic impasto brushwork of Pisarro, Cezanne and the Impressionists, and encouraged by the anti-Dada/anti-Surrealism movement of post World War I, when artists like Matisse and Bonnard strove to create images of beauty and harmony, of balance and purity, and of emotional and psychological well being.
I am moved most by nature and the products of it and primarily use flowers and other grown organic matter as the inspiration for my paintings. While I paint in the traditional medium of oil on canvas, my large floral paintings are never traditional or typical. Influenced by my stained glass background, where the play of light and the shading of paint on pre-imposed color define an image, I strive to create luminous oil paintings that seem as if to project their color from within. In the painting process, I work with a cold wax medium that produces a matte look to an oil painting while enabling me to leave behind vestiges of my active brushwork. I layer color below color which produces a depth and intensity in the tone of my paintings that is bright and radiant, never muddled or dull.
I strive to create images that explore the varying qualities of light and nature through dynamic compositions that are seductive and intriguing. I attempt to create artwork that is elegant and aesthetically pleasing, as well as captivating and compelling. I think my finished pieces are beautiful. Entrancing. Appealing.
